Doctor Jazmin Scarlett
BSc (Hons), MSc, PhD
Flood Resilience Officer at Environment Agency
Science and Engineering
I am the oldest of 6 (4 adopted) siblings. As well as having the chronic physical disability of Systemic Onset Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis, at present I am seeking a diagnosis for autism. I just started archery, enjoy playing table top role playing games (TTRPGs) and video games.
I’ve always been fascinated by how the Earth works, so from an early age was interested in geography and geoscience. This led me to pursuing an academic career that covered natural hazard and disaster management, focusing specifically on volcanoes, heritage studies, and pedagogy.
I focused on volcanoes and in particular volcanoes in the Caribbean due to my family’s ties to Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. Their experiences of living with one of the most active volcanoes in the Caribbean inspired me to take an approach that mixed physical and social science. I gained a PhD in Earth Science, which is a great achievement for me and my family, as I am the first in the family to gain a PhD.
I have published a number of papers and book chapters however, my favourite was combining my love of video games with volcanoes, exploring the accurate representation of volcanoes in videogames and how useful they can be in teaching students about volcanoes in a fun and interactive way.
From 2020 to 2023 I was the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Officer for the Volcanic and Magmatic Studies Group, a UK and Ireland special interest group. Due to my academic achievements, I was the first Black woman to receive the President’s Award from the Geological Society of London in my efforts of inspiring the next generation of geoscientists and promotion of equality, inclusion and diversity in UK geoscience.
Due to my social media presence and research on the island, I played a role in assisting my colleagues in the Caribbean communicate about the volcanic eruption on Saint Vincent in 2020-2021.
I have since left academia but still encourage people from marginalised backgrounds to pursue a career in geoscience. Outside of my day-job, I co-founded the Aces in STEM network, providing an online space for asexual people to connect with others like themselves.”
“Never stop inspiring people to achieve their best.”
