My first job was at the age of 12 and from a young age I have always believed the key to success is hard work, determination and continual learning. This is what led me to my first job leaving university, working in investment banking at the Royal Bank of Scotland. It was here I applied myself to learn as much as possible – but its also whilst working here that I was diagnosed with Limb Girdle Muscular Dystrophy.
Having considered myself as able bodied until that point, this news was devstating for me and led me into a downward spiral. However, I told myself that I wouldn’t let my condition beat me physically as well as mentally, and that I would use my challenges to do something good for myself and for others. A few years later I read a quote on the Marcus Rashford mural which states “Take pride in knowing that your struggle will play the biggest role in your purpose” and now I embody this every day (its on the wall as you walk into our office at Limitless Travel).
Shortly after my diagnosis, I quit my job and went travelling around the world with my girlfriend (now wife) Lucy. We had an incredible expereince, and it was an experience which helped me face up to my diagnosis and what was to come.
It was also a very challenging experience as travelling, or even going on holiday, was not somethig set up for disabled people. So I wanted to do something about it, and I had a vision for Limitless Travel that would create a world whereby anybody with any disability could see and explore the wonderful world we live in. I started Limitless with no money, no experience, no support. It was a blank page with just a name and a vision. I told myself that starting out was like stepping into an ocean – there was nothing in front of me, no end point, no goal, no destination. There was nothing to guide me. I just new I had to step in and start “swimming”. If I kept on going then eventually I would come across things to help me, and eventually I would find land.
Well its now been 8 years and whilst we definitely found lots of land, we’re still swimming in that ocean, still focussed on achieving my mission of revolutionising travel for disabled people.
Sometimes if you want something to exisit, you have to make it yourself.
