Community Lead Nurse for Complex Care at Radis Community Care
Community Advocate
I am currently believed to be the only wheelchair-using nurse with a working assistance dog in the UK and I’m so proud to be flying that flag.
I was awarded the UWl Alumni ‘Recent Graduate’ award in 2022 and since then I have gone on to be ITV This Morning’s ‘Inspirational woman of the year’ on international woman’s day, and then the winner of the ‘Exceptional home care nurse’ category at the Stars of Social Care awards. I’m also honoured to be a finalist for the ‘Nurse of the Year’ award for the Nursing Times and a finalist for the RCN ‘Patient choice award’. And not forgetting my wonderful assistance dog Ocho who is a finalist for the Animal Star awards too!
My goal is to inspire more children and young people to consider careers in health and social care. I want to show people it can be done.
Yes I am disabled, but I am also a highly qualified and skilled nurse who is more than capable of continuing my nursing career.
I need the workplace to be adapted to be more accessible but that doesn’t change who I am. I also want to show other employees that having a disabled employee is great! We are an asset and we can bring a different perspective, especially to things like care. I hope to open up more doors to disabled people with a passion for helping people. With the retirement age increasing and the workload as it is for nurses unfortunately becoming disabled is more likely and I want everyone to continue to feel valued and appreciated.
I love attending events as a disabled ambassador and chatting to the disabled kids about their futures.
Disabled isn’t a bad word. Let’s all embrace it and show our power as a community.
“Disability is power! We are a strong community who stick together. I love being a nurse and helping other disabled people, but I am able to accept when I need help too. It’s a balancing act but we’ve got this!”
