Top 10
For over 30 years, Andrew Miller has blazed a trail across the arts and broadcasting worlds. He champions creative disabled people, using his significant influence to democratise our national culture.
Andrew started out in children’s television presenting Channel 4’s groundbreaking series Boom! As one of the first generation of disabled presenters in UK broadcasting he quickly became a role model, fronting tv programmes throughout the 1990s.
Moving behind the camera, Andrew then made BAFTA nominated arts and music documentaries before changing direction again, becoming the first wheelchair-user to run a major UK entertainment venue. More recently as a cultural consultant he has been advising the University of Oxford and Coventry City of Culture.
Andrew is a National Council member of Arts Council England, a Governor of the Royal Shakespeare Company, a trustee of Welsh National Opera and previously served on the boards of The Arts Council of Wales and digital arts agency The Space. He is a member of BAFTA and chairs the BFI Disability Screen Advisory Forum. In 2020 he co-founded the UK Disability Arts Alliance #WeShallNotBeRemoved campaign, and co-authored the Seven Inclusive Principles which advocates for an inclusive cultural recovery.
Between 2018-21 Andrew was the UK Government’s first Disability Champion for Arts & Culture, establishing the role as a powerful campaigning platform for greater inclusion across the arts, museums and film. His pioneering career has been recognised by the 2021 New Year Honours, The Stage 100, National Diversity Awards and the Disability Power 100 2019 and 2020
“As we emerge from this terrible pandemic, it’s vital that society builds back for all of us.
I call on the gatekeepers of our national culture to offer fair representation, continued opportunities and increasing progress for disabled people. Because we will all have been through too much to allow ableism to re-emerge to prevent inclusion”.
