Access Advisor and Inclusion Consultant, Mik Scarlet Access
After a successful career in the media, Mik retrained to focus on the world of equality and inclusion. Working in the construction industry, he has advised on projects of all sizes from major city and town planning through to individual developments. He also worked as part of the London Organizing Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) on the Paralympic Games.
Forming alliances with Deaf and Disabled People’s Organisations (DDPOs) such as Transport For All and Inclusion London, and private companies such as Goss Consulting and Network Rail, Mik is now one of the UK’s leading experts on inclusive practice and design. He has worked with Transport For London, the Department of Transport, and several public transport companies to push for an accessible transport system, which is a personal obsession.
As well as advising business and government, he has lectured at several universities and colleges on inclusive design, spreading understanding of inclusion to the next generation. Mik is also developing training for young disabled people, teaching them about the Social Model, equal rights and inclusive design, passing on his knowledge to ensure the next generation can continue to work towards a fairer and more equal society.
He is currently working with Derby City Council, and is advising several businesses, arts centres, theatres and retail outlets on ensuring they can ease lockdown with inclusive social distancing.
Oh, and don’t worry; he is still working in the media too.
“If you design a world that works for disabled people, it works for everyone.”
